GPS will practise ‘Sarawak First’ concept — CM

- By Norni Mahadi

MIRI: The newly registered Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) upholds the spirit of ‘Sarawak First’.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg gave this commitment at a recognition night – Majlis Malam Jasamu Dikenang - for the former women leaders of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Telang Usan in Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club here on Saturday.

Abang Johari, who is also president of PBB, said there were not many changes in the constitution of GPS.

“Three days ago, GPS was finally registered and there were not many changes in its constitution.

“Tonight, I want to reveal that our constitution is based on ‘Sarawak First’ because with such arrangement we are able to develop the state better.”

He felt very honoured to be invited to the recognition night, saying it was the first political function he attended after GPS was registered as a political coalition party.

He said the registration would enable GPS to run the state better and bring more development.

“The political landscape has changed as the people in Sarawak are well- educated and technology has also made the situation more challenging now.

“With the 55 years’ experience after gaining independence, we know better how to manage our politics and run our administration.”

For the greater future of Sarawak, he said there is a need for the present leaders in the state to adapt to the surrounding changes by not only continuing to improve and provide the best service to the people but also to be committed to uplifting the living standard of the people in the state, particularly those in rural areas.

In this respect, he pointed out that PBB was well respected by the people as the approaches of the party were more inclusive in order to ensure everyone in the state benefited from development.

He expressed gratitude to the late Temenggong Datuk Oyong Lawai Jau, who was a leader in Telang Usan, for reminding that “if we gain our independence we must deliver our promises”.

He added that the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) gave Sarawak special rights which the young generation should safeguard.

Thus, he urged the people to rally behind him in the fight to reclaim Sarawak’s rights which had been eroded from the federal government.

Later, he presented recognition awards to 23 past women leaders of PBB Telang Usan branch.

The recognition night was organised in conjunction with the Sarawak Women Day 2018.

Also present were Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau, Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting, Miri mayor Adam Yii, Miri Resident Sherrina Hussaini, PBB exco member Datin Esther Balan Mujan and PBB Telang Usan Women chief councillor Margaret Uding Nawan.
