Sabah band delights fans in Kuching

KUCHING: Award-winning Sabah-based band Estranged delighted local fans here on Saturday with a two-hour showcase during their first ever performance in Sarawak.

Hundreds flocked to The Black Box at Borneo 744 for the show, which also featured local acts such as Sarawak’s sape sweetheart Alena Murang, popular Sabahan singer Velvet Aduk, and a special appearance by Sarawakian hip-hop collective Tikar Terbang.

Estranged vocalist Rich Gimbang told The Borneo Post that the show was ‘historical’ as the band had never played a dedicated show in Sarawak before.

“After tonight’s (Saturday) event, we feel that we want to be part of the local music community in Sarawak too, as we feel we have more to share with fans here,” he said when met at Kuching International Airport yesterday.

He added the band hopes to be able to visit the state more often in future, not just to perform but to also get to know local fans more.

“We also intend to continue our charity work in raising awareness and collecting funds to buy micro hydroelectric generators to power villages in Sarawak that have no access to electricity.”

Rich also revealed that the band wants to travel statewide next year in their ‘Misi Jelajah Elektrik Borneo’ tour which they previously embarked on in Sabah.

“What is important for us is that we not only spread our music, but also make a lot of new friends along the way. This (tour) is also a corporate social responsibility project aimed at raising awareness about the need to assist interior folk with basic amenities,” he said.

Estranged is best known for their song ‘Itu Kamu’, which won the Best Song award in Anugerah Juara Lagu 2008.
