Mu’Izz, Nur Zulaikha crowned champions in Polytechnic Lawn Bowls Tournament
KOTA KINABALU: Muhammad Mu’Izz Mohammad Norzairi and Nur Zulaikha Mohd Raslan were crowned champions of the inaugural Malaysia Polytechnic Lawn Bowls Singles Tournament that ended in Likas here yesterday.
Mu’Izz of Johor kept his composure well in a closely fought final for the Men’s title, winning 19-15 against Sabah A’s Mohd Raihan Roziman at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex Lawn Bowls centre.
Mu’Izz and Raihan won RM150 and RM100 each while Mohd Sharil Haliff Hasimahrop of Sabah B and Onironnie Joachim Mathew of Sabah C settled for joint third placing with RM70 prize money each.
In the Women’s singles final, Nur Zulaikha of Negeri Sembila D registered a comfortable 208 victory against Nurul Atiqah Zahurin of Selangor.
Nur Izzati Mohd Ibrahim of Perak B and Nur Aishah Zamri of Negeri Sembilan B finished in joint third placing.
As in the Men’s category, the winner took home RM150 followed by RM100 for the runner-up and RM70 each for the joint third placing.
Hosted by Kota Kinabalu Polytechnic (PKK), the inaugural tournament saw participation of five polytechnics namely from Sabah, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Perak and Selangor.
Some of the best bowlers who have represented the country or their respective states at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) also took part.
Polytechnic Education and Community College deputy director-general (Governance) Ts. Hj. Mohamad Amin Hamat, who is also the chairman of the Malaysia Polytechnic Sports Council, hoped that the tournament would be the catalyst to ensure polytechnic students to achieve greater heights in the sport.
PKK director Zainab Othman, in her speech made avaialble to the press, said the tournament would act as platform or an avenue to select the best athletes to be roped into the polytechnic lawn bowls squad.
Among those present at the prize presentation were Kuantan Metro Polytechnic director-cumthe council secretary general Mohd Jalil Che Jusof, PKK deputy directors Norhanom Awang (Acadedmic) and Mohd Sahran Mohidin (Academic Support), PKK Culture, Co-curriculumn and Sports Department head Sulliman Ismill, Sabah Lawn Bowls Association presidnet Datuk Ladislaus Maluda and his deputy Shuib Hashim.
