Harimau Malaya can spring surprise against Thailand

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Although only two wins were recorded in the previous 10 meetings, the Harimau Malaya squad still has the ability to spring a surprise when facing Thailand in the semi-finals of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup 2018.

On paper, Thailand, which emerged champions of Group B with an unbeaten run in four matches, were seen as the favourites, but PKNP FC coach Abu Bakar Fadzim believed Malaysia was capable of scarring the clean record of the ‘War Elephant’ squad.

The former Perak player said it was not impossible for Malaysia to win this Saturday if it took into account overall performance shown by head coach Tan Cheng Hoe’s players when drubbing Myanmar 3-0 recently.

“There is going to be a bit of difficulty when facing Thailand because they are the favourites. Thailand have good players and it’s proven when we see their latest performance, and winning all matches comfortably in the group stage.

“But Malaysia is capable of creating a shock. The team’s performance is getting better and the victory over Myanmar gave the team a sense of confidence and motivation. We are also given the advantage of playing on our own home turf first so use it as best as possible to be able to go to Bangkok comfortably, “he told Bernama.

Malaysia would be entertaining Thailand’s visit at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium this Saturday in the first semi-finals action before visiting the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok for a reciprocal match on December 5.

Meanwhile, Abu Bakar said defensive invincibility was the main element that needed to be stressed to check Thailand, which was renowned for its fast-paced game, from penetrating the Malaysian goalmouth.

He said the country’s defensive lineup should be more careful in absorbing the opponent’s assaults as well as staying disciplined to avoid making simple mistakes when defending. — Bernama
