KOTA KINABALU: Christian Didier Chin concluded his 2018 campaign with a bang by clinching two titles at the 54th Port Dickson Open Tennis Tournament on Sunday.

The national junior tennis ace from Sabah won the Men’s singles before partnering Tara Afzalirad of Iran to the mixed doubles crown.

In the men’s singles, third seeded Chin overcame fatigue and illness to beat Negeri Sembilan’s second seed Syed Agil 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

Chin also added the mixed doubles titles where along with Tara as the tournament second seed, they defeated third seed Ahmad Hazeeq/Yus Syazlin Nabila 6-0, 6-1 in the final.

“(It’s) good to end the year winning this tournament. It is the 54th time that they had it and on grass court... it was amazing to win.

“I won singles and mixed (doubles) and will have my name be carved on the trophy... for me it is one of the most unique events for tennis in Malaysia,” he said yesterday.

Chin went on to reveal that he was not supposed to take part in the Port Dickson Open, which started on November 22, having just competed at the Masters Tennis Malaysia.

“It was a last minute decision. My coach called me informing that they had register me in the tournament.

“He told me that he knew the tournament director who said it would be great if I can come because a lot people wanted to see me play. So, I agree.

“My first match was at 10 o’clock in the night and I won. It was tiring but I enjoyed playing every match and I am always getting better, that’s the best thing.

“In the final, I vomitted in the first set. I was down 4-1 then but I came back and won... it feels good.

“As for the mixed doubles, we thrashed everyone so it was a good tournament,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chin made it to the semifinals of the Masters Tennis Malaysia which ended on November 23.

After going unbeaten to win his group, Chin faced national number one, Ahmed Deedat of Selangor in the semifinals before going down fighting 6-3, 3-6 and 4-6.

Chin however did not return empty handed as he won the Most Promising Player award at the Masters, which is contested by the top eight ranked players in the country.
