Bagan Serai MP, four senators join Bersatu

KUALA LUMPUR: Bagan Serai MP Datuk Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali and four senators yesterday joined Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).

The senators are Senators Council of Malaysia president Datuk Seri Khairudin E.S. Abd Samad; its treasurer Datuk Suhaimi Abdullah; its Orang Asli representative Isa Abdul Hamid and its Siamese representative Aknan Ehtook.

All five of them handed over their Bersatu membership forms to Bersatu president and Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and received their membership cards from Bersatu chairman and Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Dr Mahathir had earlier chaired a meeting of the Bersatu supreme leadership council at Menara Yayasan Selangor here.

The Bersatu chairman said the party was prepared to accept their membership because it does not have a two-thirds majority in Parliament.

Dr Mahathir said the lack of a two-thirds majority is preventing the party from fulfilling its promises.

“Several matters that we have promised require a two-thirds majority to be implemented,” he said.

He also said that the new members cannot hold any post in the party during the first year of their membership.

Dr Mahathir said Bersatu will implement certain amendments to improve the system for admission of new members.

Asked about the alleged attempt to topple Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, Dr Mahathir said: “As far as we know, Faizal is still the MB.”

On Wednesday, Perak DAP chairman Nga Kor Ming said he is certain there is a conspiracy to topple Ahmad Faizal based partly on a disclosure made by Perak Religious and Islamic Education, Rural and Entrepreneur Development Committee chairman Asmuni Awi.

Asmuni had claimed that a Perak Umno leader had offered him the post of menteri besar if he leaves Pakatan Harapan and forms a new state government.
