Dishing out budget meals under a tree

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Just RM4.50 for a plate of rice and a piece of fried chicken or ‘ikan cencaru’ served with bean sprouts and topped with gravy, as well as a glass of iced black tea to wash the meal down.

That too at a fish head curry stall located under a tree in the prime Lucky Garden area in Bangsar.

Lest one thinks this ‘economy’ meal is inferior in quality and taste, head to Bangsar Fish Head Corner.

Seeing people of all walks of life, including tourists, queuing up patiently to place their orders easily testifies the owner’s cooking skills.

Not even the prospect of having to share their table with strangers and eating under the blazing sun can keep them away from this stall.

The owner, who only wants to be identified as Uncle Anuar, opened the stall 26 years ago

Those with deeper pockets can opt for his famous fish head curry priced at RM20 to RM80. He uses ‘ikan merah’ (red snapper), ‘ikan jenahak’ (golden snapper) and ‘ikan tenggiri’ (mackeral) to make his fish head curry.

Uncle Anuar’s signature dish is prepared based on his own secret recipe, and he himself mixes and blends the spices.

“I use various spices, including white pepper from Sabah and Sarawak,” he shared.

By the way, his humble stall is included in the list of eateries offering the best fish head curry in the federal capital. It is open from Monday to Saturday, from 8.30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
