Team KK sweep Sabah squash junior championsh­ip

KOTA KINABALU: Team Kota Kinabalu showed their prowess by sweeping all the titles available at the State Inter-District Squash Junior Championsh­ip that ended in Likas near here recently.

The three days of plays saw intense competitiv­e squash among boys and girls under nine, 12, 15 and 17 categories respective­ly.

In the boy’s under-17, Mohd Adam Amrie of Kota Kinabalu lifted the trophy by defeating the much younger Mohd Akid Izz Zulkifli from Tawau in the final, while Yee Zheng Hong of Sandakan came third after defeating Muhammad Azib of Kota Kinabalu.

To finish fifth and sixth placing were Fernando Richard from Kota Kinabalu and Syafiq Asyari from Tawau.

In the girl’s category for the same age group, Etain Tay defeated her 11-year-old Kota Kinabalu teammate, the CIMB Grand Final girl’s u-11 champion Doyce Lee. Rachel Richard from Kota Kinabalu and the Sandakan lass Nurrizati were third and fourth respective­ly.

Tristan Andreas beat Euven Liaw 3-2 in a tooth-and-nail boy’s u-15 final. The third placing went to Mohd Syarif Akmal from Tawau, the fourth placing was Bryan Richard followed by Jeremy in fifth place.

Other top eight finishers were Timothy Chang, Mohd Aidil and Mohd Danish.

Kota Kinabalu swept all the top eight placing in the boy’s u12 with Danny Gan lifting the champion trophy after defeating Clement Richard. Third and fourth place went to Jeddidiah Kwan and Gary Fitzgerald respective­ly followed by Nicolix Eng, Ricoweldo Aloysius and Brandon Chin.

Amber Kristy Muyou took the girl’s u-9 title after upsetting Clarabelle Funk 3-0. Branice Chin and Nicole Hii took third and fourth placing respective­ly.

The boy’s u-9 saw an encouragin­g performanc­e from the much younger players.

Eugene Lee of Kota Kinabalu emerged champion after beating defensive-minded player Dave Elvin Stamos also from KK 3-1. Other top eight finishers were Ean Lee, Gabryel Faurillo, Oswald Wong, Mohamad Rizqi, Liew Toh Wen and Aiden Chin.

Chairperso­n of Kota Kinabalu Squash, Connie Lo, said it was indeed one of the most satisfying and impressive participat­ion, where 86 junior players from the three affiliated districts namely Sandakan, Tawau and Kota Kinabalu took part.

She was also utterly amazed at the high level of discipline and hard work shown by all the junior players as well as their respective coaches throughout the championsh­ip.

The Junior Squash Championsh­ip was sponsored by Sabah Sports Council, Nestle Milo and Simply Chocolate.
