Man fined over pirated DVDs

KOTA KINABALU: A man was fined RM 5,000, in default, two months' jail by the Magistrate's Court here yesterday for possession of pirated Digital Video Discs (DVDs).

Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie imposed the fine on Ng Yun Leong, 35, after he pleaded guilty to having the items without a 'B' certificat­e at a shopping complex here on September 13.

The unrepresen­ted accused was convicted under Section 18 (4) (a) of the Film Censorship Act 2002, which carries a maximum fine of RM30,000 or a jail term of up to three years or both, upon conviction.

In an unrelated case, two men were convicted by the same court after they pleaded guilty to possessing and consuming syabu.

In the first case, Mohd Azrul Fikry Nordin, 18, was fined a total of RM4,500 for possessing 0.01grams of syabu in front of a bakery shop in Putatan on September 18 and for consuming syabu after he was arrested for drug abuse at Penampang police station on the same day.

In the second case, 30-year-old Rosli Sabidin was jailed eight months for consuming syabu after he was apprehende­d at a transport garage here on October 20.

Mohd Azrul and Rosli were also ordered to be placed under police supervisio­n for two years.
