Hosts Sabah clinched a fifth gold to exceed their ini al target of four gold a er only two days of competition on in the National Senior and Junior Weightlifting Championships.
KOTA KINABALU: Hosts Sabah clinched a fifth gold to exceed their initial target of four gold after only two days of competition in the National Senior and Junior Weightlifting Championships.
Elly Cascandra Englebert and Fandylina Adim were the toast of squad after bagging two gold medals each in the women senior and junior categories at the Starcity Asia City yesterday.
Kevdylan Wong contributed the first gold for Sabah on the opening day of the competition on Sunday.
Elly, the 19th Malaysia Games (Sukma) gold medallist, justified her top billing by winning the women’s 55kg senior and junior top placing.
Elly lifted 74kg in Snatch and 90kg in Clean & Jerk for the total of 164kg.
Fandylina had earlier achieved top finishes in senior and junior category of the women’s 45kg battle after registering total weights of 115kg (Snatch 53kg, Clean & Jerk 62kg).
Another Sabahan Caseyndra Junaity bagged the silver in the junior event of the same weight category with her total of 90kg (Snatch 45kg, Clean & Jerk 45kg).
As for Kevdylan, he won the gold from men’s 67kg for junior competition after totalling 252kg (Snatch 107kg, Clean & Jerk 145kg).
Kevdylan also added a bronze to his collection after finishing third in the senior competition behind the Armed Forces (ATM) duo Mohd Hazirul 276kg and Mohd Suzaimy (260kg).
Sabah other medallists included Callixtus Daunis with a silver in the men’s 61kg division. The senior athlete totaled 251kg after registering 111kg in Snatch and 140kg in Clean & Jerk.
Velerick Matin totalled 203kg (Snatch 91kg, Clean & Jerk 112kg) to finish with a silver in junior category and bronze in the senior competition in the men’s 55kg event while Arthur Liew delivered a bronze in the men’s junior 73kg event with his total lift of 213kg (Snatch 98kg, Clean & Jerk 115kg).
As of yesterday, Sabah have collected a total of five gold, three silver and three bronze medals in the championships.
The state bagged two gold, one silver and two bronzes in the senior category and three gold, two silver and one bronze in the junior competition.
Selangor are second with a combined haul of five gold and one silver followed by the ATM with two gold, two silver and two bronzes.
For the record, the championships are contesting the new weight categories for men and women as introduced by the International Weightlifting Federation.
As such, the best lifts for Snatch, Clean & Jerk and Total are recognised as new national records.
The championship will resume its third day of competition today.
