Five jailed for drug abuse

TAWAU: Five men were sentenced to five months' jail by a Magistrate Court yesterday for drug abuse.

Magistrate Ferhanshah Farene imposed the sentence on Indonesian­s, Rahman bin Abd Karim, 37, Syed Abd Rahman bin Syed Said, 24, Filipinos, Suisin bin Saliling, 52, Arshadan bin Aminuddin, 22, and Ismail bin Adi, 27, to a charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drug Act which provides for a fine not more than RM5,000 or imprisonme­nt not more than five years upon conviction.

On November 23, 2018 at about 10pm, the accused with another person still at large broke into a house at Lorong Saddani, Mile 2, Apas Road and stole three gold chains, five gold rings, about RM300 cash and a handbag.

Rahman, Syed Abd, Suisin, Arshadan and Ismail were tested positive for either methamphet­amine and amphetamin­e while being in the custody at the Tawau Police Headquarte­rs.

The magistrate also ordered for all of the accused who did not possess any identifica­tion documents to be referred to the Immigratio­n Department for deportatio­n after serving their sentence.

At the same magistrate court, a 23-year-old local man was sentenced to five months in jail for possession of 0.1 grams of syabu.

The accused, And Mohd Azrin bin Mohd Ali, 23, was caught in possession of syabu in his front pants pocket on September 21, 2018, at about 10.45am at Kg. Pasir Putih after a police team, checking the area, saw the accused acting suspicious­ly.

Prosecutin­g officer Inspector Rahman Burijin prosecuted in both cases.
