Weightlift­ing associatio­n gets biggest incentive

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Weightlift­ing Associatio­n received the biggest pay out at the Sabah Athletes Incentives Scheme Presentati­on Ceremony that was held at the Youth and Sports Ministry’s office in Wisma Muis here, yesterday.

A total of RM194,010 worth of incentives were presented to state athletes and associatio­ns for their achievemen­ts at national and internatio­nal championsh­ips in 2016 and 2017.

From that total, SWA received RM43,500, of which RM17,000 was for achievemen­ts in four major tournament­s in 2016 and another RM26,500 for three championsh­ips in 2017.

Sabah Aquatics Associatio­n received the second largest pay out of RM34,000, which included RM26,900 for 2017 and RM7,100 for 2016, while Sabah Archery Associatio­n received RM29,400 worth of incentives for their achievemen­ts in 2016.

Associatio­ns representi­ng squash and muaythai completed the top five recipients where each received RM24,650 and RM19,750 respective­ly.

Associatio­n for other sports also received incentives. They were karate (RM6,900), cycling (RM6,600), athletics (RM5,500), taekwondo (RM5,200), badminton (RM5,000), sailing (RM3,200), bodybuildi­ng (RM2,900), tenpin bowling (RM2,300), hockey (RM850), athletics masters (RM750), silat (RM600), chess (RM500), boxing (RM300), lawn bowls (RM210) and motorsport­s (RM200).

Meanwhile, in his speech during the ceremony, Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung lauded the Sabah Weightlift­ing Associatio­n for setting the mark for other associatio­ns to follow.

The Youth and Sports Minister-cum-Tanjung Papat Assemblyma­n also congratula­ted all the associatio­ns and their athletes for their respective achievemen­ts.

He urged all of them to continue to strive for sporting excellence to better themselves and to lift the state’s name.

Also present was permanent secretary Datuk Awang Damit Anak, Sabah Sports Board chairman Dr Tan Kah Hock, Sabah Sports Council director Terrance Edward Pudin as well as presidents and representa­tives of the various sports associatio­ns.
