Ample financial aid for deserving students at TAR University College

-

HAVING been established for almost 50 years, Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (‘TAR UC’) still stands by its mission and vision to continuously provide not only topnotch education but also an education that is affordable to all Malaysians.

In line with this principle, TAR UC also provides financial assistance to underprivileged but deserving students so that they are able to pursue quality higher education.

Such financial assistance is made available in the form of interest-free study loans, sibling discount and scholarships/grants to lighten the financial burden of deserving students who wish to pursue their tertiary education at TAR UC.

The main financial assistance provided by TAR UC is the student loans.

The need-based TAR UC Student Loans consist of 35 TAR UC Student Loan Funds set up by philanthropic organisations, corporations, alumni and individuals to provide interestfree revolving loans to support needy and deserving students to pursue their studies.

Since TAR UC Student Loans’ inception in 1979 until to-date, more than 12,000 students have benefited from the loan, with more than RM32 million disbursed.

In recent years, TAR UC has also offered sibling discount as a form of additional financial support to parents with two or more children studying at TAR UC.

Under the sibling discount, newly-registered students with sibling(s) who are full-fee paying students in the same semester at TAR UC are eligible for a discount of RM1,000 off their 1st semester tuition fee.

Besides that, there are also the scholarships/ bursaries administered by TAR UC in partnership with external organisations / alumni association.

These include The STAR Education Fund, Sin Chew Daily Education Fund, Nanyang Tertiary Education Fund, TAR UC – TAA Scholarship, TAR UCTAA Scholarship (Top Glove) and TAR UC – JINBODHI Bursary.

These scholarships / bursaries are created so that more qualified TAR UC students will benefit from them.

Other than the above-mentioned scholarships and bursaries, there are also many other external scholarships and grants provided by corporations and philanthropic organisations to help deserving TAR UC students to pursue their studies.

Among them include the Kuok Foundation Study Grants, Tan Sri Lee Loy Seng Foundation, Yayasan Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng Scholarship and Lion-Parkson Foundation Scholarship, Malaysia Rubber Export Promotion Council Scholarship Awards for Undergraduate Studies, Loh&Loh Corporation Berhad Scholarship Programme, to name a few.

Students who have benefited from the financial aid provided by TAR UC had much to be thankful for.

Two TAR UC students, Hemavanan A/L Krishna Kumar and Nicholas Ho Yi Ming, were very thankful when they received financial assistance from TAR UC – Jinbodhi bursary and TAR UC – TAA Scholarship respectively.

“I feel so grateful to be a recipient of the TAR UC – JinbodhiBursary as it has helped me and my family a lot and allowed me to continue my studies,” said Hemavanan.

The Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Logistics and Supply Chain Management student shared that the bursary had enabled him to continue his studies after completing his self-funded Foundation programme whereby he had to take on part-time jobs to finance his studies.

“By receiving this bursary, I am able to focus on my studies and also participate in extra-curricular activities which not only keep me fit and healthy but also help me improve my communication skills.”

“Believe in yourself, and most importantly, give yourself a chance!” is the mantra that Nicholas Ho, a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Electrical and Electronics student, holds so closely to his heart and this belief eventually landed him the scholarship.

“It was quite intimidating having to ask strangers for financial support. But I was desperate to help ease the financial burden of my family. So I took charge of my own destiny and gave myself a shot at this scholarship. Now, I can set my gaze on my goals and move forward, thanks to TAR UC and TAA,” he said.
