Olivia Colman to be honoured with Palm Springs Festival award
WITH “The Favourite” scooping up a host of nominations for the 2019 Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes, its lead Olivia Colman (pictured right) is set to receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, running Jan 3-14, 2019.
Yórgos Lánthimos’ movie, also starring Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, had a limited release in the United States on Nov 23, and opens nationwide Dec 21.
“In ‘The Favourite,’ Olivia Colman steals the show as a frail and aloof Queen Anne, whose attention is being sought by two scheming cousins,” festival chair Harold Matzner said in a statement. “For this superb performance, that has received much critical acclaim and awards recognition, it is our honoUr to present the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress to
her.” The period drama cleaned up at the British Independent Film Awards, winning 10 prizes, including Best British Independent Film, Best Director for Lánthimos, Best Actress for Colman, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Weisz. And this may just be the beginning, since “The Favourite” has bagged five Golden Globe nominations and three SAG Award nominations, not to mention 14 nominations for the Critics’’ Choice Awards.
Colman is also up for awards at each of the three ceremonies, after previously winning best actress titles from the Venice Film Festival, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and Toronto Film Critics Association.
As well as Colman, other award winners include Bradley Cooper, who will be honoured with Director of the Year for “A Star Is Born” at the Palm Springs festival.
Glenn Close (“The Wife”), Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me? “) and Alfonso Cuaron (“Roma”) are also on the winners’ list at this 2019 edition.
