BELURAN: A total of 18 Interact Club members from four secondary schools here participated in a one-week training programme on Sustainability Agriculture Management in Oil Palm Plantations.

The programme was a joint project between the Rotary Club of Sandakan North and Wilmar/PPB Oil Palms Berhad.

The schools selected for the programme were Sandakan Yu Yuan Independent School, SMK Tiong Hua, SMK St Cecilia, and SM St Mary.

According to the president of the Rotary Club of Sandakan North, Koh Hong Lian, the programme was a result of a Memorandum of Understanding that was signed between the club and Wilmar/ PPB Oil Palm Berhad on July 31.

“The training consisted of one-week attachment at Sapi Plantations, stressing on Oil Palm Plantations best practices, in line with Wilmar’s policy of no deforestation, no peat and no exploitation.

“The project also highlighted the Rotary Club’s area of focus, such as growing local economies and starting initiative on community engagement with emphasis on training on project sustainability,” Koh said during the closing ceremony of the training programme.

Also present during the ceremony was the general manager of Wilmar-PPB Oil Palm Berhad (Sabah Operation), Kiaw Che Weng.

Kiaw said the company was committed to the MoU that was signed between the two parties, and expressed hope that the participants had learned about sustainability agriculture management in the palm oil industry.
