Sabah to host Borneo Ladies Golf Challenge in March

-

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah will play host to the 20th Borneo Ladies Golf Challenge Trophy Tournament in March next year.

Sabah Team Captain Datin Jeanette Tambakau disclosed that Tawau had been chosen as the venue for the event during a courtesy call on Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Christina Liew, on Tuesday.

Lady golfer April Wong from Tawau is the Organising chairperson.

Christina, who is also Member of Parliament for Tawau, has been invited to grace the prize presentation dinner at Promenade Hotel on March 8.

“I am happy that the organisers have selected Tawau’s Hot Spring Golf Course as the venue for the tournament. The move is apt and timely as we are aggressively promoting east coast tourism. Tourism players are in the midst of upgrading the existing facilities in anticipation of an influx of tourists next year,” she said.

Some 120 golfers from Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan Federal Territory and Negara Brunei will vie for honours in the March 6-8 competition.

The minister assured that her ministry would consider the request for some form of support to ensure the event’s success.

“Traditionally, the tournament has always been held in Kota Kinabalu. For a welcome change, we have decided to hold it in Tawau in support of the Government’s tourism promotion efforts. We are going to explore the beautiful and challenging Hot Spring Golf Course,” said Tambakau, adding that the fresh seafood served in restaurants there was another attraction.

According to her, the Borneo Ladies Golf Challenge Trophy Tournament was initiated in 1991, and every participating state takes turns to host the activity.

Also present were the ministry’s Principal Assistant Secretary, Mary Malangking and Sabah Tourism Board General Manager, Suzaini Datuk Sabdin Ghani.
