School necessities for children of dialysis centre

-

KOTA KINABALU: Some 70 children of the Peter Mole MAA Medicare Charity Dialysis Centre in Sabah here will receive school bags and vitamins, school shoes and stationery here during Christmas month.

The items, sponsored by CCM Duopharma Biotech Berhad, Bata and Faber Castell, are being distributed by MAA Medicare Charity Dialysis Centre.

“It’s heart warming to see the Foundation go beyond providing basic dialysis treatment to the needy patients. I understand that birthdays and festivities are also celebrated. Kudos to the team and Dr Liew Boon Seng,” said Assistant Law and Native Affairs Minister Jannie Lasimbang at the handing-over ceremony to 15 of the 70 patients at the dialysis centre here yesterday.

The 70 patients in Sabah, among 755 children who are patients from 12 dialysis centres in Malaysia, will receive the school supplies from MAA Medicare Charitable Foundation throughout December.

“I am proud to be associated with this as I have been the centre’s nephrologist for the past 18 years. The Foundation has set up the program successfully solely for the schoolgoing children of their dialysis patients throughout the country,” said the centre’s consultant nephrologist Dr Liew Boon Seng.

“Most of the patients here are not rich whole, some are not rich while some are middle income earners and some can barely make ends meet. This Back-To-School support for these 15 children will go a long way to ease the burden of the patients,” he added.

The foundation has also established MAA Medicare Cardiac Diagnostic and Treatment Centre, the first cardiac centre for the underprivileged in the country.

The cardiac centre was set up to save lives and improve health through disease prevention, lifesaving cardiac diagnosis and safe treatment modalities.

It also advocates health education with the objective to create awareness and instigate research on cardiac disease.

MAA Medicare is an independent public trust fund that intends to ease the financial burden of kidney patients and their families by providing affordable access to quality dialysis, healthcare and essential drugs at a subsidized cost.
