Ministry to work with different sectors to improve Chinese language signage

KOTA KINABALU: The Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry will work with different sectors to improve the Chinese language signage at hot spot areas in Sabah.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Christina Liew said the ministry, especially through the Sabah Tourism Board, would work towards this especially since tourists from China made up a large number of arrivals into the state.

She said this in response to a question posed by the press on whether the ministry would put up more signages in light of reports that Chinese tourists were unable to translate the Malay or English language to Chinese successfully using Google Translate.

“Actually, the Consul General of China, also offered (to help). If we need some translation, they will assist us also, he said that,” said Christina, who is also Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, during the BrandLaureate Industry Champion ICON Awards 2018 press conference held by STB at Hyatt Regency here yesterday.

“We just work with different sectors to make sure, as comfortable as possible, the arrival of the tourists. I am very sure that all these issues will be handled from time to time. It’s just that sudden surge, sudden increase in arrival of tourists make us a little bit unprepared. But in times to come it will be okay,” she assured.

Christina pointed out that a translator had already been stationed at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport to assist tourists and signage and banners had been prepared for tourists from China.
