MRT Corp first in Asia to achieve BIM Level 2 accreditation

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp), the project owner and developer of the Klang Valley MRT (KVMRT) project, has become the first infrastructure developer in Asia to achieve accreditation for its adoption of Building Information Modelling (BIM) Level 2.

Its acting chief executive officer, Datuk Najmuddin Abdullah, said the accreditation was a big achievement not only for the KVMRT project but for the Malaysian construction industry as a whole.

“This accreditation means our project and organisation has achieved the level of competence and impartiality to internationally recognised standards,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

The accreditation, in accordance to British Standards was presented by Lloyd's Register, a renowned international classification society which provides professional services for engineering and technology, for BIM Level 2 adoption for the MRT Sungai Buloh-SerdangPutrajaya (SSP) Line.

Najmuddin said, MRT Corp, as developer of the country's largest infrastructure project was well positioned to lead the way for a digitalised future of the construction industry in Malaysia.

“This accreditation has also put MRT Corp in the process of being certified with the soon-to-be released ISO 19650 for organisation and digitisation of information about buildings and civil engineering works, including BIM,” he said.

BIM is a process of creating and managing the digital representations of 3D models and associated information to support decision making throughout the project life cycle.

“With the right control and management, the BIM process shall reduce the number of design conflicts to avoid costly rectification works later on,” he added.

BIM Level 2 involves the use of the 3D models and information that is shared to all project stakeholders through a common database called the Common Data Environment (CDE, as opposed to BIM Level 0 and BIM Level 1 which does not provide a collaborative platform).

As for BIM utilization for the SSP Line, a total 2.3 terabytes of information is stored in the cloudbased CDE, comprising over 70,000 3D models of sites, 200,000 drawings and 30,000 documents where the data is being accessed continuously by over 700 users from various organisations involved in the project. - Bernama
