RM1.4 million drug ‘presents’ seized

-

KOTA KINABALU: The Customs Department seized about RM1.4 million worth of drugs just days before Christmas, weighing an estimated 26.59kg.

Sabah Customs deputy directorgeneral Datuk Madrim Tasan said the drugs were in the possession of a 38-year-old local man when the latter was apprehended at a courier service centre in town, around 6.50pm on Friday, December 21.

According to Madrim, the suspect claimed the drugs were “presents.”

“The drugs were found stuffed in tea packets which were packed in three MamyPoko children’s diapers boxes. When asked, the suspect said they were presents sent to him,” said Madrim.

Investigations found that the drugs, which were believed to be syabu, were sent to the suspect via courier from Kuala Lumpur.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death sentence, upon conviction.

Madrim said the packages were intercepted by Customs officers as a result of ongoing surveillance for drug-related activities.

“The Customs Department is vigilant about drug syndicates entering Sabah to deter locals from getting involved in drug-related activities which are prevalent nowadays. We are also focused on tightening border control through law enforcement.

“We urge the public to come forward with any information about smuggling activity and strongly advise against buying contraband cigarettes and alcohol,” he said.

According to Sabah Customs record, 13 drug cases were recorded up to December 26 this year, with nine arrests and four seizures worth about RM8 million.
