Four detained in Beaufort for drug possession

-

BEAUFORT: Four men have been detained by the police to facilitate investigations into drug-related activities in the district.

According to District Police Chief DSP Azmir B. Abd Razak, the suspects are all locals and aged between 20 and 49.

“Their detention is to facilitate investigation into the source of the drugs found in their possession,” he disclosed.

Azmir said two of the suspects aged 40 and 49 were arrested on the evening of December 27 after 51.01 grams of syabu were recovered from them.

Acting on a tip-off, the Beaufort police’s Anti-Narcotics Unit carried out a raid behind the Kuala Penyu district hospital about 3pm. The two men were in a vehicle parked there and according to the tip-off, were involved in drug-related activities, he said.

The police first checked the 40-year-old suspect, an unemployed man from Kampung Sembulan Tengah here and recovered four packets of crystal-like substance suspected to be syabu from a container that was in his trousers pocket.

The substance weighed about 0.93 gram, Azmir said, adding that the second suspect, a 49-year-old man from Kampung Laut Bongawan in Papar admitted to having syabu in the vehicle.

Further check uncovered the drug, weighing about 50.08 grams near the vehicle’s hand brake, Azmir said, adding that the two men also tested positive for drugs.

“They are being investigated under Sections 39B and 12(2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952. We also want to find out the source of the drugs,” he said.

Amir said the other two suspects were arrested after police recovered 26.75 grams of suspected marijuana from one of them.

Both suspects were from Kampung Lubok in Weston, he said, adding that they were arrested on Dec 29 at about 5.30pm.

The Beaufort police’s anti-narcotics unit conducted an operation around the vicinity of Kedai Bingkul in the district and saw a youth exiting a dark coloured vehicle in a suspicious manner, said Azmir.

“When a police personnel approached the youth and identified himself, the latter tried to run away but was apprehended. A check on the 20-year-old youth uncovered a package containing 10 packets of different sizes from his pants pocket.

“Each of the packets contained dried leaves suspected to be marijuana. Although a check on the vehicle did not come up with any suspicious items, the second youth, 22, was also taken to the police station for further investigations,” he said.

The younger suspect admitted to police that the drug belonged to his elder brother who is residing in the state capital and he did not know where it came from, Azmir disclosed, adding that both tested negative for drugs.

The case, he said is being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.

All the four suspects did not have any previous criminal record.
