KOTA KINABALU: Newly minted Mayor Datuk Haji Nordin Siman said participation of traders has been encouraging at the newly introduced Api-Api Food Market along Gaya Street, which operates every Friday and Saturday evening.

Met by the media members during his walk-about at the market on Friday evening, Nordin gave the assurance that City Hall (DBKK) would valueadd the attractions at the market to make it more appealing to visitors and tourists.

He reckoned that among the improvements were the inclusion of cultural performances by the various natives in Sabah and buskers (street performers).

He said since the night market, now known as Api-Api Food Market @ Gaya Street, was launched last Dec 2, it has received encouraging response from foreign and domestic tourists.

The improvements would also generate more businesses for local traders in the area, said Nordin, who took over the mayor’s post from Datuk Yeo Boon Hai on January 2.

The night market was introduced as part of City Hall’s 2019 tourism strategies to lure visitors and tourists alike to come and visit the city, and also to provide local traders a place to conduct their businesses.

The night market operates from 6 pm to 2 am every Friday and Saturday with stalls selling food, beverages, local fruits and handicraft.
