GPM sends third round aid to Sunda Straits tsunami victims

SEPANG: Volunteers from Global Peace Malaysia (GPM) are sending another round of humanitarian aid for the victims of the Sunda Straits tsunami.

The aid, mostly in the form of school items, food supply and temporary shelter, was aimed at giving comfort to the victims, many of whom are still living in camps.

GPM mission chief Shahrir Azfar Saleh said GPM anticipated 5,000 victims to benefit from its humanitarian mission this time around, which is the third in it series.

“So far GPM has collected RM30,000 in donations and we are hoping for more donations from the public so that continuous aid and assistance can be given to the victims,” he told Bernama when met at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) before leaving for the Sunda Straits today.

Five people comprising two GPM representatives, Bernama journalist, Muhammad Afiq Asri, Bernama News Channel journalist Siti Zanariah Nor Zin and cameraman Mohammad Hafiz Ahmad Kamal are involved in this mission until Jan 24.

The tsunami that struck the Sunda Straits on Dec 22 was triggered by an underground landslide caused by the volcanic eruption on Anak Krakatoa and was followed by tidal waves. Approximately 400 victims were reportedly killed, while 30,000 were left homeless. - Bernama
