Sarawak, federal governments agree to develop food industry

KUCHING: The Sarawak government has agreed to work with the federal side to develop food industry in Sarawak, through the implementation of an agropolitan project on a 2,000-acre land.

According to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, the federal government had earlier asked the Sarawak government to assist in the development of the food industry.

This came about following a letter addressed to him through the chairman of the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) Tun Daim Zainuddin, on the development of the food industry in Sarawak, which Abang Johari said he would be willing to do.

Speaking to reporters after the opening of ‘Fiesta Samariang’ at Kampung Lintang here yesterday, the chief minister said the 2,000-acre project site is in Lingga, Sri Aman.

“This is the result of understanding and cooperation between the Sarawak and the federal governments to advance the food industry in order to benefit the people. I have told (Deputy Chief Minister and also Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development) Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas that he has been given the responsibility of finding a new approach in the food industry for the success of the project.

“It is in line with the Sarawak government’s efforts in developing its food industry, which Sarawak has a lot of potential, to benefit the people.”

Abang Johari said the project had the potential to succeed because of the understanding between the Sarawak and federal governments.

On a related subject, Abang Johari encouraged Sarawakians to come up with food products that could penetrate the world markets, such as instant noodles.
