Even smokers support ban

- By Azmie Lim

LAHAD DATU: The state government’s decision to enforce the nationwide smoking ban at public eateries from next month has the support from the people here, including smokers.

Efa Rizan Ahmad, 31, and a mother of two, said this was a very good action taken by the government to stop harming the people, especially children while at public eateries.

She said this action also showed that the government was being considerate to all groups including the smokers who can still smoke three metres or 10 feet away the premises.

“I am married to a smoker. We have our own ban in which my husband is only allowed to smoke outside of the house and this smoking ban seems acceptable.

“We could not force them to stop smoking immediately, but I believe this method could help reduce their smoking habit,” she added.

Meanwhile, a smoker supported the smoking ban as it is way to show respect to the community.

Barlianta Abd Hakim said it was clear that smoking had adverse health impact and could also affect others - the non-smokers.

“I will still go to my favorite restaurant to hang out with friends or eat with my family.

“Smoking or not, time spent with them during the meal is the time I need to cherish,” he added.

Another smoker, Edwanshah Maujun, who is also a father, expressed his support for the enforcement of a smoking ban in the State.

He said just like at home, he always avoided smoking in front of his daughter and other kids at the public eateries.

“This for the benefit of the community. I do not mind smoking far away from the people, as I also want other smokers to do the same for my family,” Edwanshah added.
