Register child’s birth within stipulated period — NRD

-

BEAUFORT: Parents in Sabah should register the birth of their child within the stipulated period to avoid problems, said State National Registration Department (NRD) director Datuk Ismail Ahmad.

He said problems would arise in future if the child’s birth was not registered, including for the child to attend school.

“This matter has to be viewed seriously by parents for their children’s future. We have requested the assistance of the Community Development Leader Unit (UPPM) in all divisions in the state to disseminate the information and inform NRD if there is any problem in their respective areas,” he added.

Ismail said poverty and distance were factors which resulted in parents in the remote areas to not register their children’s birth with the NRD.

“However, the NRD Mobile Unit is every ready to assist, especially in the rural areas,” he added.

He said more than 50 programmes were conducted by the NRD Mobile unit in Sabah and more than 500 individuals were assisted to obtain their birth certificates and identity cards.

Ismail told reporters this after handing over the birth certificates of seven siblings, aged between five and 17, in Kampung Sabang, Kuala Penyu near here yesterday.

The children’s father, Marius Thomas, 44, thanked the Sabah NRD, the Kuala Penyu UPPM, the Education Department and the Kuala Penyu District Office for their assistance in helping him to get the birth certificates for his children. - Bernama
