500 to take part in Tg Aru Beach Run
KOTA KINABALU: Some 500 people will be taking part in ‘The Last Tanjung Aru Beach Run’ at the rugby field in Tanjung Aru, this Sunday (Jan 13).
The run, which consists of two main categories, namely the 10km main event and the 3km fun run, attracted runners from all over Sabah and the country.
Set against the backdrop of an ocean shoreline, the run offers scenic views of the Tanjung Aru Beach landscape.
The run starts at 6am and all runners are expected to finish in time for the prize presentation ceremony at 9am.
Prizes await the top 10 finishers, while a lucky draw will give participants more chances to win prizes.
According to the organiser, Kelab Berbasikal SPED (Sabah Public Works Department), led by chairman, Edward Lingkapo, the objective of the event is to raise funds for Sabah children’s Cancer Society.
“Even though we did not achieve our targeted number of participants, the response is still encouraging,” he said.
Aside from donating to charity, Edward said the event was also aimed at promoting healthy lifestyle and unity among the people.
“We also want to promote family bonding that is why we have the 3km fun run where parents can bring their children.
“As for the elite runners, there are cash prizes and trophies for the top 10 winners in all four categories,” he said.
Towards this end, event coordinator Steve Johnny Mositun reminded participants that the race pack collection would be from 10am to 10pm at the Public Works Department headquarters on January 11-12.
“We also remind participants to bring along their proof of payment slip with them so we can verify their status for the run,” he said.
