KOTA KINABALU: Public cooperation has led to the arrest of two suspects, believed to be the masterminds of an explosion at a goldsmith shop in Segama here on New Year’s eve.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Omar Mammah, however, said that three more suspects were still at large, comprising two men and a woman.

“After thorough investigation was conducted based on public information, police managed to detain a 22-year-old foreigner on January 2, who is believed to have planned the robbery. Interrogations led to the arrest of a 64-year-old local fisherman on January 5. This suspect is said to be a bomb expert, who produced the bomb used in the robbery,” Omar disclosed at a press conference yesterday.

Omar said the first suspect was the one who revealed three more accomplices, whose identities still remain unknown but go by the names of Lani, Aris and Siti.

“The suspects are still at large, believed to be in their 30s and are not locals. Police also managed to confiscate some residue of the explosives. Both suspects in custody are remanded till January 17 for further interrogation,” he added.

According to Omar, all five suspects are believed to be friends. A similar robbery was reported in Putatan in 2017. However, both cases are unrelated. Police also believed that the suspects had planned to commit robberies in other districts.

Omar reminded the public to contact the police immediately with any information regarding the three remaining suspects who have yet to be caught.

On December 31 morning, a powerful explosion ripped open a grilled entrance of the goldsmith shop.

Police suspect that it was an attempted robbery but nothing was taken from the goldsmith shop.
