Man shot when he wanted to throw child out of window – CP

-

KOTA KINABALU: Police acted according to procedure in handling incident on Sunday where a man took a two-year-old girl as hostage at a house on the fourth floor of the Telipok Ria Apartment block near here.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Omar Mammah said personnel from the Criminal Investigation Department of the state police headquarters and the Tuaran District police headquarters held negotiations with the man.

He said police even sought help from the public to communicate with the man in the Sulok language.

“The negotiation failed and police were forced to shoot him when he wanted to throw the child out of a window,” he said yesterday.

Omar said police have yet to identify the dead suspect and did not find any documents on him but believed that he was not a local. Fingerprints had been taken and sent to the National Registration Department to check on records of registered documents.

“Police found a phone on the suspect which has been sent to the forensic department for analysis and to have the contacts list recovered. From there, it could possibly help us identify the suspect,” he said.

Omar said rumours that the threeyear-old girl’s fingers were cut off although she sustained injuries when the perpetrator held a knife to her neck.

He said the suspect was a stranger and not the father of the child.
