Associatio­n donates to church building fund

PENAMPANG: Persatuan Syarikat Pengurusan Kelab Negeri Sabah donated RM30,000 to Holy Nativity Church Terawi to help fund the constructi­on of a community center which will be used as education center for Sunday school, tutor class, youth and children programs and other activities.

The mock cheque presentati­on was made by Monica Chang on behalf of the Persatuan Syarikat Pengurusan Kelab Negeri Sabah to Parish Priest - Rev. Rector Fr. Federick Raymond, witnessed by Penampang District Officer Robert Stidi.

Also present during the mock cheque presentati­on were Holy Nativity Church Terawi representa­tives Milford Aldin Draily (Parish Terawi Pastoral Chairman), Kevin Joibi and the parish committees, while the representa­tives from Persatuan Syarikat Pengurusan Kelab Negeri Sabah were Mervin Lu, Kenneth Yapp and Richard Lim.

On behalf of Holy Nativity Church Terawi, Federick thanked the associatio­n for the generous donation and would like to welcome others to support the Parish in raising fund for the building.

The Parish needs to raise at least RM1 million for the building.

Constructi­on work has stopped for the past two years due to fund shortage.

The fund-raising committee urge more support from the community so that they are able to continue with the constructi­on work.

Terawi Parish is situated between Donggongon and Putatan township on a five-acre piece of land. It has a Catholic population of 7,290 out of a total population of 12,000 scattered in the villages of Monsopiad, Mahandoi, Tuaui, Kanadaru, Bukitas, Sukod and Talang Taun. The parish comprises Holy Nativity Terawi, St Simon Duvanson, St Peter Tombovo and Our Lady of Fatima Talang Taun.

The first missionary to reach this place was Fr Alexander Prenger in June 1885.

Among the missionari­es who came here was Fr Florian Jud in 1959-1960. Its history as a Catholic community began on 3 Aug 1977 under St Michael Penampang Parish with the name of Terawi Catholic Community Council, and then later on, it was renamed as Terawi Catholic Community Pastoral Council. The Marian grotto was built in 1984 while the present 800seating capacity church was built in 1993. The parish hall was completed in 1999 and on 1 December 2010, Archbishop John Lee changed its status to a parish now known as Holy

Nativity Parish Terawi, making it the second parish in Penampang District, while The Shrine of Mary Mother of Hope was added in 2010.
