My appointment in NEAC to address specific problems in Sabah — Darell

-

PENAMPANG: International Trade and Industry minister Datuk Darell Leiking believed that his appointment in the National Economic Action Council (NEAC) was to address specific economic problems in Sabah.

Darell stressed Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad created the council for this particular term to address and mitigate the economic situation that the country is facing today.

“So, for the Prime Minister to include me, I think it’s just normal because we are (in the) International Trade (and Industry Ministry), alright. So, he would have to include the Minister of Finance, Economics Minister, the International Trade (and Industry Minister) and probably one or two more ministers that he may add later on. Why he needs to do so is because we will then be specific,” he told the press after launching the Malaysia Automotive Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) Satellite Sabah centre at Donggongon Avenue here on Saturday.

“In Sabah, yes, because I believe he appointed me not because I am a Sabahan only but because I happen to be from Sabah. I am a minister in the cabinet, and I happen to be from Sabah,” Darell told reporters when asked whether he was appointed to address the economic situation in the state.

The Prime Minister’s Office established the council to scrutinise and make decisions regarding economic and financial affairs as well as the people’s wellbeing.

The main objectives of the council, which is chaired by the Prime Minister, are promoting sustainable economic growth, ensuring equitable distribution of wealth and enhancing the people’s well-being.

The council is also expected to examine issues related to cost of living, needs for manpower, poverty and home ownership.
