Rapper San E's performance causes public uproar

SEOUL: Rapper San E has once again caused a public uproar for misogynist actions.

After he appeared on MBC's hip-hop program “Target: Billboard - Kill Bill” on Jan. 31 and performed his song “Wannabe Rapper,” several people pointed out that the screen the rapper had performed in front of featured the phrase “I love hidden cameras.”

Although the words were only on-screen for a split second, people online were outraged because the rapper had been performing a song in which he claims to be a feminist. The lyrics to the song include, “Why would I hate women (no no no), I'm a feminist (you know), I love them ladies.”

Hidden cameras are a sensitive issue in Korea, as an increasing number of cameras have been found secretly installed in public places, such as the bathrooms, to film women.

The program's production crew released an official apology Thursday saying, “The phrase ‘I love hidden cameras' appeared on the screen for one second. Although we did a check prior (to the performances,) we failed to spot the words. We are sincerely sorry for failing to filter out such an inappropriate phrase.”

Last year, the singer was involved in several controversies that drew the ire of women across the country after releasing the song “Feminist” in November. After a slew of controversies, the rapper terminated his contract with his agency Brand New Music in December.
