Part-time car salesman arrested for allegedly cheating client
PENAMPANG: A part-time car salesman was arrested by the police for allegedly cheating his client of RM2,800 recently.
Penampang police chief DSP Mohd Haris Ibrahim said the incident happened when the victim came across an advertisement of a second-hand Perodua Viva car for sale in Facebook on November 12 last year.
The victim who was interested with the vehicle contacted the suspect and the later asked for a RM3,000 deposit as an advance payment into a bank account.
“The following day (November 13, 2018), the victim deposited RM2,800 into a bank account provided by the suspect.
“The victim realised that he had been cheated when he had not received or heard from the suspect for a couple of months.
“This prompted the 30-yearold victim to lodge a police report on February 14 this year,” said Haris at a press conference at the Penampang police contingent (IPD Penampang) monthly gathering yesterday.
Acting on the report, police managed to apprehend the 29year-old suspect in
Penampang for investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.
Haris therefore reminded the public to be careful when purchasing anything via Facebook to avoid being cheated.
Meanwhile, Haris said the crime index in Penampang between January and February 21, increased by 31 cases or 4.6 percent, as compared to the same period of last year.
The increase, said Haris, was normal due to the rapid development in Penampang and Putatan.
“This is, however, not an excuse and we continue to strive to keep the Penampang and Putatan community safe.
“All this can be achieved through continuous cooperation with all communities,” he said.
