Fix worn out facilities in KK call

-

KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Youth assistant leader Chin Vun Pheaw urged the relevant authority to study and formulate ways to improve basic infrastructure to prevent cases such as the sewage pollution at Likas Bay from happening again.

Chin, who is also the leader of the Likas Division Youth Movement, said the people had high expectations on the new government to rectify issues left behind by the previous administration, including leaking sewage pipeline.

“The quick action taken by Likas assemblyman Tan Lee Fatt to address the sewage pollution issue at Likas Bay is what the people expect to see after the change of government.”

Despite being one of the popular tourism destinations in the region, he said many infrastructure and facilities in Kota Kinabalu were old and worn out.

“There is a need for the relevant authority to set up a task force and address this issue,” he said in a statement yesterday, adding that safety hazards such as broken canopies or ceilings of shoplots must be looked into.

Chin said the people expected their livelihood issues to be resolved with the change of government, and that government departments like the Public Works Department could respond promptly to their complaints.

He said Tan had also informed that replacing the 10-kilometer sewage pipeline from Likas Bay to the sewage treatment plant in Inanam as a long term solution, was expected to cost more than RM 20 million.

As such, he hoped that other elected representatives would also look into and resolve issues in their respective constituencies before the problems exacerbate.

Chin also urged the Minister of Health and People’s Wellbeing Datuk Stephen Wong to assign a team to disinfect the area to prevent the spread of diseases caused by the sewage pollution.

He further reminded the government to be transparent on its development plans and keep the people up to date on the progress of projects.

“The government should also engage with the people and obtain their feedback on how best to solve problems that arise.”
