KPJ organizes first Orthopaedic Symposium
KOTA KINABALU: KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital organised its first Orthopaedic Symposium for more than 120 participants, comprised of general practitioners, nurses and allied health personnel from all over Sabah.
The Orthopaedic Symposium emphasised on greater awareness of orthopaedic injuries and issues, the available treatment and rehabilitation services at KPJ Sabah and Queen Elizabeth Hospital as well sharing of orthopaedic cases experiences by the respective specialist.
Three experts in Orthopaedic, Trauma and Sports Injury from KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital respectively - Datuk Dr Heng Aik Cheng, Dr Aaron Gerarde Paul and Dr Ryan Tan Chen Wee - conducted the lectures. Topics were on Emergency Medical Treatment in Natural Disasters, Common Orthopaedic Problem, Updates in Orthopaedic Related Cancers and Knee Joint Injury respectively.
Among the participants were general practitioners, medical officers and health professionals from government hospitals and the public.
Dr Heng’s lecture was about common orthopaedic problems which is associated with arthritis, osteoporosis, elbow, foot and knee pain, ligament injuries, torn meniscus among others as well as the rehabilitation on the common orthopaedic problems. He also touched on the emergency medical treatment in natural disaster.
Dr Tan touched on sports related injury. He said it is common among non-professional athletes mainly because of ignorance as well as no proper early treatment. As a result, chronicity is the end of result of poor performance as well as drop in performance. Awareness among nonprofessional athletes is crucial in order they can continue to enjoy their sports without any repetitive injuries.
Dr Aaron talked about cancers from the bone and cancers that have gone to the bone. This also included the types of orthopaedic cancers and orthopaedic cancer treatment.
Booths were also set up to display medical supplies and pharmaceutical products.
In his welcome speech, Professor Datuk Dr Ajaz Ahmad Bin Nabijan, Medical Director of KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital hoped that the Orthopaedic Symposium would provide the participants with better input and information to the various issues pertaining to Orthopaedic.
He believed that the interesting symposium provided a good platform for the speakers and participants to share and discuss on related orthopaedic issues.
