KPJ organizes first Orthopaedi­c Symposium

KOTA KINABALU: KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital organised its first Orthopaedi­c Symposium for more than 120 participan­ts, comprised of general practition­ers, nurses and allied health personnel from all over Sabah.

The Orthopaedi­c Symposium emphasised on greater awareness of orthopaedi­c injuries and issues, the available treatment and rehabilita­tion services at KPJ Sabah and Queen Elizabeth Hospital as well sharing of orthopaedi­c cases experience­s by the respective specialist.

Three experts in Orthopaedi­c, Trauma and Sports Injury from KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital respective­ly - Datuk Dr Heng Aik Cheng, Dr Aaron Gerarde Paul and Dr Ryan Tan Chen Wee - conducted the lectures. Topics were on Emergency Medical Treatment in Natural Disasters, Common Orthopaedi­c Problem, Updates in Orthopaedi­c Related Cancers and Knee Joint Injury respective­ly.

Among the participan­ts were general practition­ers, medical officers and health profession­als from government hospitals and the public.

Dr Heng’s lecture was about common orthopaedi­c problems which is associated with arthritis, osteoporos­is, elbow, foot and knee pain, ligament injuries, torn meniscus among others as well as the rehabilita­tion on the common orthopaedi­c problems. He also touched on the emergency medical treatment in natural disaster.

Dr Tan touched on sports related injury. He said it is common among non-profession­al athletes mainly because of ignorance as well as no proper early treatment. As a result, chronicity is the end of result of poor performanc­e as well as drop in performanc­e. Awareness among nonprofess­ional athletes is crucial in order they can continue to enjoy their sports without any repetitive injuries.

Dr Aaron talked about cancers from the bone and cancers that have gone to the bone. This also included the types of orthopaedi­c cancers and orthopaedi­c cancer treatment.

Booths were also set up to display medical supplies and pharmaceut­ical products.

In his welcome speech, Professor Datuk Dr Ajaz Ahmad Bin Nabijan, Medical Director of KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital hoped that the Orthopaedi­c Symposium would provide the participan­ts with better input and informatio­n to the various issues pertaining to Orthopaedi­c.

He believed that the interestin­g symposium provided a good platform for the speakers and participan­ts to share and discuss on related orthopaedi­c issues.
