Sabah MSS, SJK Chung Hwa KK come out tops

Sabah Malaysia Sports School (SMSS) and SJK (C) Chung Hwa Kota Kinabalu came out tops in their respec ve categories of the Sabah School Sports Council (MSSS) Aqua c Championsh­ip here on Tuesday.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Malaysia Sports School (SMSS) and SJK (C) Chung Hwa Kota Kinabalu came out tops in their respective categories of the Sabah School Sports Council (MSSS) Aquatic Championsh­ip here on Tuesday.

SSMS, as the centre for sports excellence, justified their top billing after capturing the overall champions title in Secondary School category in the three-day meet at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex in Likas near here.

The athletes of SSMS won a massive collection of 29 gold, 19 silver and 31 bronze medals to edge nearest rivals SM Kian Kok who finished with 10 gold, 19 silver and nine bronze medals.

SMK Muhibbah Sandakan settled for third with nine gold, two silver and one bronze medals.

In the Primary School category, Chung Hwa KK topped with 11 gold, seven silver and eight bronze medals.

The Loo Yie Bing-inspired SJK (C) Pui Gin Sandakan settled for second place with eight golds while SJK (C) St. James Likas with two gold, five silver and three bronze medals finished third.

The swimming meet saw athletes compete in the under12 (Primary) as well as the under-15 years old and under-18 years old (Secondary) age-group categories.

Meanwhile, Yie Bing showed her class in the three-day meet by winning the most gold won by an individual athlete to single- handedly propel her school to finish second in the Primary School category.

The state swimmer collected eight gold medals and to make it even memorable, the 12-yearold also set seven new MSSS records.

The impressive feat, unsurprisi­ngly, won her the Top Female Swimmer for the under12 category.

As for the Boys’ under-12 Top Swimmer Award, it went to Shane Chong Kian Heung, 12, of Chung Hwa KK after winning five gold, three silver and one bronze medals.

In the under-15 category, Samuel Ng Chong Cheng, 13, of SMK Muhibbah with five golds and one bronze won the Top Male Swimmer Award while Lee Wei Len, 15, with five golds, one silver and one new MSSS record was the top performer in girls’ category.

Gerard Tsen Xiang Zhi, 17, of SMK Muhibbah and Lovell Wong Hisao Thang, 16, of Kota Kinabalu High School (KKHS) won the Top Male and Female Under-18 Swimmer awards.

Xiang Zhi achieved five golds and two silvers and also set a new MSSS record while Hsiao Thang broke three MSSS records and bagged four gold and two silver medals.

Kota Kinabalu District Schools Sports Council in collaborat­ion with Sabah Aquatic Sports Associatio­n (SASA) organised the swimming championsh­ip, which was a platform to select athletes to the national schools (MSSM) competitio­n.

Datu Roslin Datu Siabuk, deputy director general of Human Developmen­t Sector (Sabah Education Department), officiated at the closing of the swimming championsh­ip.
