Massive operations to curb drugs, crimes in Tawau — police

TAWAU: Police will launch large scale operations against drugs and crimes in the district.

District police chief ACP Fadil Hj Marsus said the main targets would be hotspot for drugs and crimes, and urged the community to help reduce the crime rates in the district.

In a multi-government agency swoop called Ops Sarang early Wednesday morning, 39 people were arrested on drug-related charges and 27 for violating the Immigratio­n Act 1959/63.

Fadil said the operation was conducted at several villages and premises and succeeded in seizing or roping in those involved in drugs.

In conjunctio­n with the coming Police Day celebratio­n, he said such operation would be stepped up, including covert operation.

Meanwhile, in the latest drug case, he said a 22-year-old Indonesian man was detained and 53 grams of drugs were seized from the suspect at an apartment in Kuhara Court yesterday.

He said police acting on informatio­n from the public raided an apartment on the first floor at 4.10am.

The drugs were found inside a bag inside a room where the suspect was detained.

He added the suspect also tested positive for drug abuse.

In another case, he said a 17year-old Filipino youth was nabbed in Mile 10, Apas after 22 packets of syabu weighing about 11 grams were found in his backpack.

He said in the operation, 159 individual­s including 76 women were screened after which 23 women and eight men were detained.

Twelve were held for an offence under the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 while 27 were detained for offences under the Immigratio­n Act.
