Tshung Tsin, Chung Hwa champions

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School (STTSS) and SJK (C) Chung Hwa Likas reigned surpreme in the 51st Kota Kinabalu District School Sports Council (MSSD Kota Kinabalu) track and field championsh­ip.

STTSS were just too good for their rivals as they walked away with the Secondary School category overall champions title and Chung Hwa Likas with the Primary School overall title.

A haul of 25 gold, 13 silver and 11 bronze medals saw STTSS secure a comfortabl­e win, leaving SM Lok Yuk Kota Kinabalu (CF) in a distance second with 11 gold, six silver and eight bronze medals.

SMK Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu completed the top three after winning six gold, nine silver and three bronze medals.

STTSS’ outstandin­g feat as the overall champions was expected after topping the boys’ and girls’ under-18 categories while finishing second in the girls’ and third in the boys’ under-15 categories.

In the boys’ under-18, STTSS came out tops with seven gold, two silver and four bronze medals while the girls added 11 gold and four silver medals.

As for the under-15 events, STTSS boys won two gold, one silver and two bronze medals while the girls contribute­d five gold, six silver and five bronze medals to the school contingent.

SMK Lok Yuk topped the medal charts for under-15 with the boys winning four gold, two silver and three bronze medals while the girls bagged seven gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

Despite dominating the overall medal standings, only a single athlete from among the top three teams won the Best Athlete Award for Secondary School category.

Nathania Wong Tze Xing of Lok Yuk KK was the recipient of the girls’ under-15 top athlete award after winning a unique sprint treble (100m, 200m, 400m), all of which are new records for MSSD Kota Kinabalu.

The boys’ under-15 top athlete was Ahmad Adam Fahmi Ahmad Rizudin of SMK Agama Kota Kinabalu after setting a new record in high jump event.

The top athlete award for boys’ under-18 also went to SMK Agama middle distance runner Muhammad Dzulfikri Matin with two gold medals in the 3,000m and 1,500m.

He also set a new record for the 3,000m event.

As for the girls’ under-18, Ira Elisa Lajium of Maktab Nasional was the best of them all by winning gold and setting new record in discus and shot putt gold events.

In the Primary School category, Chung Hwa Likas bagged two golds, two silvers and one bronze to narrowly edge SRK Lok Yuk Likas to the overall champions title.

SRK Lok Yuk lost on the silver medal count after winning two golds and a bronze to settle for second overall while SJK (C) Shan Tao were third with one gold, three silvers and two bronzes.

Chung Hwa Likas also bagged the boys’ overall title with two golds, two silvers and a bronze while SRK Lok Yuk took the honour in the girls’ overall with two golds and one bronze.

The schools also shared the invidual awards for athletes with Victor Voo Vui Ken of Chung Hwa Likas winning the Best Under12 Boys’ Athlete with two golds and two silvers while Qyurine Qamelia Syami of SRK Lok Yuk took the Best Under-12 Girls’ Athlete with two golds and one bronze.

A total of 752 athletes from 53 primary schools and 536 athletes from 26 secondary schools took part in the three-day competitio­n.

Kota Kinabalu District Education Officer Umin Haji Sadi officiated at the prize giving and closing ceremony. Also present was SMK Inanam Super Principal Mozidah Hamzah.
