Malaysians smash two SEA Youth Championship records

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian athletes broke two meet records at the 2019 Southeast Asian Youth Athletics Championship in Ilagan Sports Complex, Ilagan City, Philippines.

Fifteen-year-old Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi emerged as the new ASEAN ‘sprint prince’ after winning the boys’ 100m gold Saturday by setting a new tournament record of 10.63s.

The previous meet record was held by Thailand’s Rattanopon Sowan with a time of 10.74s set in 2011 in Jakarta, according to the results obtained from the Malaysian Athletics Federation.

It was a one-two finish for Malaysia when Muhammad Arsyad Md Saat claimed the silver after clocking 10.87s, while Indonesian Muhammad Ardiansyah took the bronze in 10.87s.

Meanwhile, Sarawakian Jonah Chang Anak Rigan broke the boys’ shot put record with 18.03m yesterday, deleting another Thai athlete Patcharapol Singrueang’s 16.76m record set last year, to clinch the gold.

Thailand’s Bandit Singhatongkul claimed the silver with a throw of 17.62m, while Singaporean Lee Jun Long Matthew bagged bronze with a 17.01m throw.

Malaysia added another gold through Mohd Irfan Izzah in the boys’ 110m hurdles.

The 17-year-old Manjung boy clocked 13.75s to claim the gold, while Singapore’s Marc Brian Louis (14.07s) and Thailand’s Suttipong Tongpech (14.38s) claimed silver and bronze medals respectively. - Bernama
