60 Labuan students receive motivational awards
LABUAN: Sixty students from eight primary and four secondary schools here received the annual motivational awards from Repsol Oil & Gas Malaysia Limited last Saturday.
This marked an increase of two secondary schools in the social investment programme which Repsol established in 2015 to assist needy children from the fishing community who produced acceptable results in the UPSR and PT3 examinations as well as having the potential and displaying good discipline at school.
The selected schools were SK Rancha-Rancha, SK Tanjung Aru, SK Lubok Temiang, SK Bebuloh, SK Patau-Patau, SK Pantai, SK Layang-Layangan, SK Sungai Lada, SMK RanchaRancha, SMK Lajau, SMK Taman Perumahan Bedaun and SMK Pantai.
Forty of the recipients from the UPSR level received RM300 each while the 20 recipients in the PT3 level received RM400 each from Repsol.
Ahmad Fakrurrazi Arshad, Repsol’s senior manager for stakeholder relations, who spoke at the ceremony congratulated the young recipients and hoped that the awards would act as a boost and an inspiration for them to work hard and commit themselves to excel in their studies so that they can have a good career to help themselves and their families.
He added that education was one of the four areas that Repsol focused on in their social responsibility programmes; with the other three being safety, health and capacity building.
Labuan Education Department director Raisin Saidin expressed his deep appreciation for this exemplary programme by Repsol which he reported had demonstrated very positive results.
“I am pleased to report that several of the first batch of recipients have done beyond expectations considering their background.
One is doing matriculation studies for pre-university enrolment while two are in Form Six,” he said.
Raisin said they would formulate a database and start an alumni in order to track the recipients because “we are serious in following up on how these recipients are progressing with their studies as well as their career paths.”
“We value this motivational awards programme from Repsol. While it is once-off, we have seen incremental results from among the recipients and we are grateful on behalf of the recipients,” he said.
Also present at the event were Repsol Malaysia’s government and community advisor for Sabah and Labuan Datuk Eddie Abdullah, Assistant Director of Education Hasbollah Amit, principals and head teachers.
