TNB subsidiary's ex-GM 's sentence for graft upheld

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court yesterday upheld the six-year jail term and RM5.4 million fine imposed on a former general manager of a subsidiary of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) for corruption five years ago.

Judge Datuk Rozana Ali Yusoff dismissed the appeal from Dr Shahanom Uthman, 55, to set aside the conviction and sentence imposed by the Sessions Court in 2017.

She said the decision of the Sessions Court judge was right because the offence was serious and it involved public interest.

On Dec 21, 2017, Shahanom was fined RM5.4 million and sentenced to six years jail after he was found guilty to eight counts of graft involving more than RM1 million and a BMW 5 Series.

Shahanom was charged with accepting the cash and the car from Bina Mekar Sdn Bhd director, Ahsan Sabri Phang Abdullah and its worker Te Boon Chun as a reward for giving discounts on the weight of unprocessed copper.

All the offences were committed at the parking lots of KL Festival City, Starhill Gallery, Stadium Negara Restaurant, ZK Al-Azmi Garden Restaurant and Bina Mekar Sdn Bhd office between Dec 5, 2013 and Dec 18, 2014.

The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Mohammed Heikal Ismail while Shahanom was represented by lawyer Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali. - Bernama
