KUCHING: Brooke Dockyard and Engineering Works Corporation (BDEWC) created history in the Malaysia Book of Records for being the first organisation to receive the ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System under the scope ‘The Fabrication of Structural Assembles and Modules for Oil and Gas Industries in Malaysia’ by Sirim QAS International Sdn Bhd.

BDEWC chairman Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg said the achievement marks an incredible feat that corroborates the capability of Sarawakians in this industry.

“Since 1996, Brooke Dockyard has always implemented elements of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Management System in project operations such as during the fabrication of Malong Jacket and Topside and eventually secured OHSAS 18001:2007 on October 2009 until October 2018.

“After a decade, the top management decided to work towards the conversion of a new certification, namely ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System, where Sirim QAS International conducted the certification audit and the outcome was a favourable one,” he said the opening ceremony of Demak Fabrication Yard, the loadout of Bokor D Substructure and the completion of Anjung Topside Projects for Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, here yesterday.

Abang Abdul Karim pointed out that with great achievement comes the effort to maintain it in order to ensure implementation and continuous improvement on the elements of the systems by all relevant personnel.

“I hope that Brooke Dockyard personnel will not limit themselves to this achievement and will continue to thrive and seek for means to improve further on the HSE Management System.”

On Demak Fabrication Yard which was officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, Abang Abdul Karim said it functions as a secondary fabrication yard for oil and gas modules and marine engineering fabrication in light of the current market demand, as well as for future potential projects.

The yard is located 5km from Sejingkat Yard on a 60-acre land at Demak Laut Industrial Estate Phase III. It has a capacity of 16,500 metric tonnes compared 8,500 metric tonnes from Sejingkat Yard, making the overall fabrication capacity for Brooke Dockyard at 25,000 metric tonnes per year.

“This asset is a huge advantage for us and has given us not only the passion but also the opportunity for us to see further and to think beyond in order to achieve what was previously impossible.

“With that said, Brooke Dockyard has managed to secure projects from Petronas Carigali and subsequently, commenced the fabrication for Anjung and Bokor Substructures by utilising Demak Yard in June 2017,” he remarked.

Abang Abdul Karim also revealed that the first major milestone and pride of Demak Fabrication Yard was the Anjung Substructure, which had completed ahead of schedule and loaded out successfully in September 2018, thus registering it as the pioneer on the success of the yard.

“To further emphasise on the triumphs of Anjung, Anjung Topside has already been completed and obtained Mechanical Completion Date (MCD) in December 20, 2018 as per planned and will be sailed away in mid-April this year,” he said.
