Vegetable wholesale market to move to P’pang Bypass April 1
KOTA KINABALU: The fruit and vegetable wholesale market at Cyber City will relocate to a site at Penampang Bypass effective April 1.
Sabah West Coast Vegetables and Fruits Farmers and Wholesalers Association president Kin Yew Min said the new market, located opposite Plaza 333, would have 270 stalls.
Despite the smaller stall space and higher rental, he believed that business would be better after the move, particularly in attracting more retail customers, as the market would be located next to the main road.
He said the current rental at Cyber City was RM300, while the rental at Penampang Bypass would be RM450.
Meanwhile, the total area of the wholesaler market at Cyber City is seven acres compared to five acres at the new site along Penampang Bypass.
Kin said the market had to relocate as its five-year lease agreement for the site will expire by then.
He said the association had leased the new site opposite Plaza 333 at Penampang Bypass for a period of 10 years.
“We believe that moving to the new location along the main road next month will attract more retail customers.”
He added that vendors at the wholesale market are members of the association. The rental fees collected are used to pay the land lease and other expenses.
Meanwhile, a vendor at the market said she had moved five times since starting her business in 1991.
Over the past 20 years, she said the wholesaler market had operated at Likas Sports Complex parking lot, Rural Development Corporation (KPD) market in Likas, Jalan Bundusan, WK Commercial Centre and Cyber City.
