Improve civil servants’ work attitude — LDP

-

KOTA KINABALU: The government should look into improving civil servants’ work attitude to enhance the service delivery system of the public sector rather than rolling out a pilot programme on flexible working hours.

Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Central Women Movement’s Public Complaints Bureau chief, Chloe Wong, said civil servants were often complained for their lack of efficiency and poor work attitude.

She said the flexible working hours programme, which will be implemented in federal government agencies in selected states starting March 1, was irrelevant in instilling strong work ethics, high efficiency and sincerity in serving the people.

She said the management and supervision of the public sector should be focused on strengthening the existing system to ensure smooth administration, coordination and efficient operations, as well as to prevent power abuse and better work attitude among civil servants.

According to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Wong said the government has to bear the salaries of 1.6 million civil servants and pensions for 778,894 retired government servants.

“In Budget 2018, emolument accounts for RM79.15 billion of the total allocation of RM280.25 billion.

“This expenditure is borne by taxpayers.

“Civil servants should not forget that taxpayers are the ones who pay for their salaries,” she said in a statement yesterday.

Wong said the public could lodge a complaint with the Public Complaints Bureau (PCB) if the services they received were unsatisfactory, and check the status of their complaints at http://pcb.spab.gov.my/eApps/ system/index .do.

She pointed out that the people had hoped for a better change with the new government.

“What needs changing the most is the work attitude of civil servants because they are the frontliners in dealing with the people.

“The government should be rectifying the poor work attitude and low efficiency of civil servants, not introducing flexible working hours.”

Wong said working hours was irrelevant to improving the efficiency of the civil servants.

She said the government should have consulted the people before making such decisions, given that the people were their clients.
