Tournament to encourage women to take up archery a big success

KOTA KINABALU: Enthusiast­s from all over Sabah took part in the Khatra Dynamic Pinky Challenge archery tournament that was held in Penampang near here, on Saturday.

The one-day event that was held at the SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin Sports School also attracted participan­ts and clubs from Labuan, Sarawak and even Johor.

The tournament, which featured various categories and events, was organised by Kelab Khatra Kota Kinabalu.

The organisers said the objective of the tournament was to provide a platform for newbies to compete and test their skills.

The tournament was dubbed ‘Pinky Challenge’ to encourage and welcome women to take up the sport that was previously dominated by men.

Meanwhile, participan­ts from the various clubs and teams enjoyed friendly rivalry in both the men’s and women’s events including the Olympic Round 18m that was won by Ken Ian Fazil from Tawau.

The Petra Tawau archer edged Uwang Uchat from Tok Jani Archery Club (Johor), while Nurhidayat­i Rahman (Petra Tawau) won the women’s section with Rohayati Tarip from Sipitang Archery Club in second place.

Nurhidayat­i also won the Flight Shooting 100m event, while Mohd Safar from Kelab Safra Penampang won the men’s category.

There was also a ‘Blackout Challenge’, where participan­ts took shots at targets while being blind-folded. R. Mas Mohd Ali Yasin from Kemtram Kota Marudu clinched the ‘King-ofInstinct’ title in this novelty event, while Noriza Timbang from Sipitang Archery Club took the ‘Queen-of-Instinct’ crown.

In the Dynamic events, where participan­ts shoot at various targets at 12 checkpoint­s, Uwang Uchat made his mark with a total of 378 points to bag the top spot in the men’s category.

Kee Muhamad Yasin @ Pak Tom from Petra Tawau was second with 332 points and Siswanto Sunario from Petala Labuan was third (also 322 points).

Nur Fatimah from Sipitang Archery Club won the women’s category with 249 points, while Rohayati Tarip and Noriza Timbang were second (235) and third (231) respective­ly.

A total of 20 clubs and teams took part in the tournament. SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin Sports School principal Nurani Fauziah Derin, who is also patron of Kelab Khatra Kota Kinabalu, officiated at the event.
