Marine Park, Semporna beach clean-up March 12

-

KOTA KINABALU: Trash in our oceans and beaches is not only a local challenge but also a global one.

With the increase of population living along the coastline of Sabah, alongside the rise in tourist arrivals, this issue demands more attention.

On September 15, 2018 - World Cleanup Day, 32Marine and Sabah Parks personnel teamed up to organize an ocean and beach cleanup event at Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, which was a great success.

32Marine’s next cleanup event will take place on March 12, 2019 at Tun Sakaran Marine Park, Semporna.

There will be approximately 30 tourism stakeholders participating, which includes the newly formed Semporna Tourism Association, who are committed to be part of these initiatives. The event is anticipating 250 volunteers to create some positive impact for the ocean and local community.

“Our goal is to alleviate plastic pollution, and bring awareness to this important issue through hosting and partaking in cleanup events, recording the trash gathered, and empowering locals through education and active participation. 32Marine hopes to unite the local community and work together to achieve a cleaner Sabah,” said Aaron Teo, founder of 32Marine.

The event will be free of charge for any beach cleanup volunteers joining this collaborative initiative. However, there will be a small fee of RM80 (including transportation and diving gear) for interested divers for the underwater cleanup. Participating divers are required to have a diving licence.
