17 years' jail over deadly Tawau crash

TAWAU: The Sessions Court here sentenced a 34-year-old woman to a total of 17 years in jail and fined RM39,000 for causing the death of four men and another man to suffer a broken left leg in a fatal accident on July 8, 2018.

Olivia Chong Oi Yun, who was the STAR's Sri Tanjong candidate in 2013 General Election, was found guilty on two charges under Section 44(1)(b) Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), which carry imprisonme­nt of not less than three years and not more than 10 years and a fine of not less RM8,000 and not more than RM20,000.

Judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud sentenced the accused to 10 years in jail and RM20,000 fine in default six months in jail on the first charge for causing death of the four victims and seven years and RM19,000 fine in default six months in jail on the second charge for causing injury to a victim.

The ordered the sentences to run consecutiv­ely.

The accused was charged with causing the death of four men and injuring another at about 1.20am on July 8, 2018 at Jalan Chong Thien Vun in front of BDC Commercial Center (1 Arena), while driving under the influenced of alcohol.

The victims who died were Hiew Nyuk Wei, 30, Clawence Wong Vui Kit, 21, Dicson Lim Kien Shing, 16, and Chung Vui Chan, 21, while the seriously injured victim was Ching Guan Xiong, 21.

The accused was represente­d by counsel Abdul Gani Zelika, while Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Muhammad Fitri Wan Azizan prosecuted the case.
