SMC acts fast to clean up Sedco Industrial Estate

-

SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Municipal Council’s (SMC) Highway and Public Utilities Committee (HPUC) and Public Works Department (JKR) took quick action following complaints by residents and businesses at SEDCO Industrial Estate area, here.

“We visited the area recently and found the situation to be really bad. With rubbish strewn all over the place and drains all clogged up, it was certainly not a pleasant sight. It was the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes as well. The stench in certain areas was also unbearable,” said Taren Sunil Manoharan, head of the SMC Highway & Public Utilities Committee.

JKR quickly cleared the drains in the sections under its authority. This was immediately followed by fast action by SMC’s contractor in areas under SMC’s jurisdiction.

“It was good to see Mr. Ng, the engineer of PKM Contractor, personally there to supervise the clean-up,” said Taren Sunil.

Taren Sunil also urged residents and business establishments located in the area to cooperate by ensuring that their workers should not dump rubbish indiscriminately.

They also must not build structures that could obstruct or damage the drains.

However, Taren Sunil pointed out that most of the illegal structures were apparently built by unknown parties. Many of these structures are stalls selling all sorts of items including food.

“To be frank, this area appears to have been neglected for sometime. It needed a big clean-up and JKR and MPS have started the ball rolling. We will continue to monitor the situation from time to time for the good of all concerned,” said Taren Sunil.
