Police target drug masterminds

- By Elton Gomes

KOTA KINABALU: The ongoing operation carried out by the Kota Kinabalu police contingent (IPD KK) is among efforts by the police in countering drug related problems in and around the state capital.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Azis Jamman said the Ops Sarang that had been carried out since early this year, was not only to counter drug addicts and drug pushers locally, but also to detect the masterminds behind the illegal activity.

“We hope through such ongoing operations, we will get to the bottom of the drug problems in the country, including drug trafficking syndicates.

“We know this is not an easy task but we will do all we can to solve drug problems in our country.

“One way to do so is the continuous cooperation played by the community in providing valuable information to the police and other relevant government agencies,” he said during the Ops Sarang operation at Kampung Cenderakasih at Kampung Likas, yesterday.

Also present at the operation was Kota Kinabalu police chief ACP Habibi Majinji.

Azis said the ministry was serious in tackling the drug problems in the country and would not compromise with any individual caught involved in any drug activity.

“Squatters areas, villages or housing estates that are known as hotspot crime-related areas will be raided by the enforcement, while houses that are build illegally will be pulled down and demolished.

“I have personally instructed the Kota Kinabalu police chief to continue to carry out operations in Sepanggar areas, as Sepanggar is known as one of the commercial hubs for Sabah,” said the Sepanggar member of parliament.

Yesterday’s operation at Kampung Cenderakasih saw some 25 men, including six foreigners, aged 16 and 63, being detained by the police for numerous drug related offences.

Police also seized about eight grams of syabu during the operations while those detained will be investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
