Sabah Osca Warriors, S’wak Devt win Sports Toto rugby tournament

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Osca Warriors and Sarawak Developmen­t team were crowned the Men’s and Women’s Club Open Cup titles in the inaugural Sports Toto High Altitude Rugby Sevens at the Ranau Sports Complex on Saturday.

The Sabah Osca Warriors’ victory however did not come easy as they were forced to dig deep into their reserves before winning the game in what was the last play of the final.

A late try and follow by conversion saw Sabah Osca Warriors clinch a 19-12 victory over Sandakan’s Eagles Developmen­t to lift the Sports Toto Men’s Challenge Trophy.

In the Men’s Plate final, Sabah Ranau Warriors claimed a 22-0 win over Tambadau RC while the Bowl title went to Sandakan Old Boys after beating Keningau RC 24-16.

In the women’s category, Sarawak Developmen­t team was in their own class as they lifted the Women’s Challenge Trophy with a 17-5 victory over Labuan Sukma 2020.

Sabah Angel Warriors who beat Sabah Cogra Warriors 10-7 and Eagles Girls who thrashed The Boss Javanicus 34-0 won the Plate and Bowl titles respective­ly.

Meanwhile, Sabah Rugby Union (SRU) president Velayuthan Tan hailed the organising committee led by chairman Johny Apin for a job well done.

While stating SRU supports to the aim of the tournament as supplement to the establishe­d Borneo Sevens in Sandakan, Tan hoped that the tournament will continue and that it would go internatio­nal next year.

Johnny, on the other hand, expressed thank to his organising committees for making the inaugural tournament a success.

The organising chairman also highlighte­d the support from Sports Toto Malaysia for their contributi­on towards the tournament as well as important figures including Tan, Sabah Osca Warriors president Benjamin Nair and Labuan Rugby Associatio­n president Rashid Aslie for their supports.
